Course Summary: Foundations of English Grammar

Course Description: This comprehensive 50-hour module is designed to introduce first-year university students to the core structural mechanics of the English language. Moving beyond basic usage, students will analyze the "why" and "how" of English grammar to build the academic proficiency required for university-level writing and analysis.

Core Modules:

1. Sentence Structure:

   • Understanding the hierarchy: Subject, Verb, Object, Complement, Adverbial (SVOCA).

   • Analyzing simple, compound, and complex sentence patterns.

2. Parts of Speech:

   • In-depth classification of nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections.

   • Functional analysis of words within different contexts.

3. Tenses & Aspects:

   • Mastering the timeline: Past, Present, and Future.

   • Distinguishing between Simple, Continuous, Perfect, and Perfect Continuous aspects.

4. Clauses & Phrases:

   • Differentiating between dependent and independent clauses.

   • Identifying noun, adjective, and adverbial phrases to enhance sentence variety.

Learning Outcomes: By the end of this course, students will be able to diagram sentences, identify grammatical errors, and construct complex sentences with high accuracy.
